Portable Kitchen PK 99740 Cast Aluminum Cooker

Brand Portable Kitchen
Model PK 99740
Listprice $360.00
Price $269.95
A perfect reproduction of a 1950s design, this retro charcoal grill would please Elvis, as well as grill and smoke meats, poultry, seafood, and vegetables in the down-home manner he appreciated. It's heavy and sturdy, and rolls around a deck, patio, or lawn on semipneumatic rubber wheels. Made of cast aluminum for maximum heat radiation, the grill cooks foods uniformly, whether they're grilled quickly or slow-cooked and smoked under the hinged lid. Four adjustable vents and dampers provide precise temperature control. Aluminum side and bottom trays offer lots of room for holding food, utensils, and condiments. The grill assembles easily with screws and nuts (included) and measures 35 inches long, 16 1/2 inches wide, and 35 inches high. Because the cooking section detaches from the lightweight aluminum carriage, the entire unit can be quickly disassembled for a camping trip. --Fred Brack ....read more

Flexible, convenient, and built to last

It’s pretty simple – I love my PK, and if you like to grill, you’ll probably feel the same.

The build quality of this grill is outstanding, and it’s super-quick to assemble. The design makes it extremely easy to cook directly over the coals or indirectly. This is a big edge over the standard kettle-style grills, where you have to do a lot of messing around to cook over indirect heat.

It’s also extremely efficient in its use of charcoal; my sense is that it uses less than half as much as my old kettle.

When you open and close the lid, it feels smooth and substantial. The vents move easily and make adjusting the heat very straightforward.

It’s rare these days to find a product that doesn’t feel like it was made as cheaply as possible. The PK feels pleasingly overbuilt, and is a joy to work with.

    The Best Grill There Is.

My dad bought one of these when I was a child. I think it was the largest model that they make, he still has it. I got married and a lady that I mowed for had a smaller model of my dad’s grill. I mowed her yards four times for it. I have had it for about 13 years now. I have replaced the grill and grate and they fit well. I can’t recommend this grill enough, it is timeless in it’s design. While the other grills have rusted and been thrown away this one will still be cooking. If you appreciate cooking with charcoal or wood, want a grill that lasts a lifetime, I highly recommend this Pk Grill.

I purchased this cast aluminum grill 32 years ago, a bit smaller than my new one but the best grill I have ever had. The new portable kitchen a bit larger but high end quality. I love it.

    Best grill for direct heat.

This is the best grill I have ever used for cooking steaks over direct heat. I also have a Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker (indirect heat) I use for ribs and BBQ. My PK is 6 years old and still going strong.

    PK charcoal grill

We purchased our grill as a young married couple in the fifties and I still use it frequently. I actually have a pork shoulder on the grill as we speak, for football company. The plastic wheels are gone but everyone raves over the flavor and tenderness of the meat. I am now in my seventies and the body of the grill is as good as ever.

best all-around for grilling & smoking
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
inherited this from my parents, over 30 years old & body seems indestructible, aluminum so it won’t rust. replaced the grill & grate, still works like new. functions great as either a smoker or grill, perfect for those of us who don’t need to smoke more than a single Boston butt, pork shoulder or a couple of slabs of ribs at once. great all-around item, especially for its size.

I bought this originally for the design figuring grills are essentially all the same. Boy was I wrong. This is so much more than a barbecue! Essentially this is my new oven. I have not used my kitchen oven since I received the cooker (with winter coming I guess I’ll have to). You “bake” food in this cooker like you would in an oven or you can grill or you can smoke. It’s very versatile. No more meat or fish that gets charred, everything is evenly cooked with the juices sealed inside. Throw on the potatoes, corn or other veggies and bread and that’s dinner. I was able to put this together myself in 15 minutes, very easy and I’m usually not to good at assembly. Clean up is also very easy as it disassembles in a minute for transport or cleaning. This is the grill to buy.

    Portable grill lasted 40 years
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My father bought our first portable kitchen over 40 years ago. I replaced the grate once and it was being used just last week. I purchased a new one last year and the quality is still supurb. Since then I have convinced five other people to buy a PK and everyone of them loves the product. A little pricy, but worth every penny, the plastic cover is unnecessary since they cannot rust (100% aluminum) but if left uncovered in the rain, water can get through the vents and the charcoal gets wet. With every other brand of kettle grill I have purchased (enamelled steel) they rust out in about 3-4 years. The PK is air tight with the vents shut so you can maintain excellent heat control and even shut down and save the charcoal for the next time. I would recommend buying a good Barbeque cookbook like “The Legends of Texas Barbeque” to get the most out of a smoker like this.

Best ever way to bake a whole chicken
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought the original in 1963 or 4. It lasted about 40 years. I now have one that I got in 1999 when they came back into production. It is the best way I know to cook a whole chicken to perfection without ever looking in. Keep the skin on for a moist & tender perfect chicken. Just set a whole chicken in a Pyrex or ceramic pie pan on one end of the grill with about 24 charcoal briquets in a pile at the opposite end. When the charcoal is starting to glow, close the lid. Totally open the vents over and under the charcoal and keep the vents closed over and under the chicken. It will be done in two hours. Or, for three hours open the vents over the charcoal only half open, but the bottom vents can be fully open on the charcoal end.

After removing the chicken, close all vents and any remaining charcoal will be available to cook your next meal. Remove the skin, carve the meat, spoon some of the juices over it & season with your favorite seasoning salt, just before serving. Optionally, remove the breast skin for the last 15 minutes of cooking and baste with barbeque sauce every five minutes. Close the lid while cooking. Either way, our guests have gone home and ordered themselves this grill.

If I owned the company, I would offer a deluxe life-time model with a nicely designed & more substantial stand with a larger & nicer ceramic tile or granite slab work table attached. I would paint the stand all black. As is, the grill is much better quality than the stand that comes with it. Portable Kitchen PK 99740 Cast Aluminum Cooker

    Best Charcoal Grill
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This really is an outstanding grill. I did a lot of reasearch on grills, specifically charcoal, and this one kept popping up and it sounded great. Although it costs more than I had been planning to spend, I decided to take the chance and ordered the grill. When it arrived it was incredibly easy to put together, and the pieces are clearly heavy-duty and durable. I am especially impressed with the cart, since so many grills have flimsy, cheap stands. This one, though, is well-build, sturdy, and easy to assemble. We’re still getting used to the vents but we’ve tried both smoking and grilling and both times we were pleased with the results. We’ve even taken it to friends’ houses twice, and transporting it was simple since the grill nestles in the cart and is easily removed. If you want a dependable, long-lasting, quality charcoal grill, this is the one for you.

    Best Grill Except For
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is in fact the BEST Grill, there is no equal! The only exception is the bottom vents on my unit (3 years old) fell off the first year I had the unit? If you want to replace them they are not cheap around $[...]. Customer service well forget it as there is none… All the written words sound great on their website but, there is no action to be found… One would think they would have sent the vents at no charge right away but, instead they just failed to respond and when they finally did, it was to tell me it would cost money for me to fix the vents.

    Incredible Cooker
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this unit over three months ago and have used it exclusively since. I am not kidding, I have cooked on nothing else but the PK – it is that good. The menu has included whole chickens, chicken breasts, chicken thighs, beef roasts, pork roasts, planked salmon, steaks, chops, brats, dogs, ribs and burgers. Everything has been perfect. Nothing else cooks like it. The genius of its design is that when it is closed (as is intended) the PK cannot support a flame. While the internal temperature remains hot enough to sear anything, meat will not burn from flare-ups. And, while the unit is closed, smoke – produced from the meat itself, wood chips or chunks, and/or your choice of charcoal – bathes your dish with wonderful aroma that you and your guests will truly enjoy.

The PK is virtually indestructible, sized right, and unique. It is pricey for those who expect to get a charcoal grill for nothing, especially in the age of shiney stainless gas units, but you won’t find another cooker that cooks as well as the Portable Kitchen.

    Best charcoal grill ever!

Well worth the money. I love this grill, however, there are times when a gas grill is nice. Since the shelf under the grill is removable, I put it on the top of the grill surface itself (with the lid open) and then put my Weber Baby Q Grill on the shelf. I got an adaptor for a large LP tank and wallah….I now have a great charcoal grill that easily “converts” into a great little gas grill using no more of precious deck/porch space. BTW…the Baby Q is an awesome grill. I love it, too. See jpg

When I was young my Dad had one of these grills and taught me how to grill on it. It was one of the originals, and it lasted until the grills rotted through and the wheels rotted out. He still used it for a number of years, limping along with make-shift equipment. But then I found this cooker and bought one. Then I bought another for my weekend place. Then I bought one for Dad with replacement grills, thinking he could store them for the inevitable replacement job…instead he resurected the original cooker. Now he has one at his home and one at his weekend place. I rarely talk to him without he mentioning the gift and how much it meant to him! I have even convinced my girlfriend and all of my Cajun friends that this is the ONLY way to grill. Buy one. It can last more than 30 years, with abuse and grill replacement. If you take care of one…I have no idea how long one could last….!!!

    PK Cooker
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought my PK around 1967. It has been my primary outside smoker and griller throughout these years. The model I have appears to be somewhat smaller than the norm I see advertised with replacement grate and grill. I have been able to replace with a close approximation, the grate; but no luck with the grill. My units’ grill is apprx 17.25″ X 14″, rounded corners.
Its a great unit. If anyone were looking for a universal cooker (smoker and griller) you simply cannot beat this unit. Some years ago, I caved in and got a multiple-burner gas grill, see-though door and all the bells-whistles. The gas grill just doesn’t compare with the results from the PK.

I BOUGHT MY PRTABLE KITCHEN BAR B QUE IN THE EARLY 1970′S WHEN
K-MART HAD THEIR FLASHING BLUE LIGHT SPECIALS. OVER THE YEARS THE GRILL PART RUSTED AWAY NUMEROUS TIMES AND I HAD A BLACK SMITH MAKE ME THE GRILLING SURFACE AND THE BASE THAT HOLDS THE CHARCOAL OUT OF EXPANDED STEEL, THIS ALSO DISENTAGRATED OVER TIME BECAUSE OF THE EXCESSIVE USE. I HAVE RECENTLY BOUGHT REPALCEMENT GRILLS FOR OTHER BAR B QUES WHICH SEEM TO ALMOST FIT AND HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FAKE IT. THE PLASTIC WHHELS DRIED OUT AND CRACKED AWAY. THE PASTIC HANDLE ON THE LID HAS BROKEN OFF. I AM EXCITED TO FIND THIS SITE ON THE INTERNET BUT I DON’T THINK I CAN SPEND THE $250.00 TO REPLACE THIS GREAT BAR B QUE GRILL THAT I PAID $5.00 FOR.

Best charcoal grill I ever used. I’ve used this grill all summer and just cooked some ribs tonight during a snow storm….because it is that good! I like the fact that the grate is hinged for easy lifting. I also love the storage space underneath. And since it is cast aluminum, it will never rust. The large cooking surface is very nice for large cook outs. For the money, this is undoubtedly the best grill you can buy.

Best and Most Versatile Charcoal Grill
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The Portable Kitchen is simply the best and most versatile charcoal grill ever built. It is a great smoker; it is great for steaks, chops, burgers, dogs, etc. You can cook anything on it you can cook in the kitchen. It will even bake breads and pizza. I inherited mine from my dad, who bought it when I was in my teens (I am now in my 50′s). I have burned up the grill and the charcoal grate, but the PK is still in use and doing well. It is at least 40 years old and going strong. I was not able to find replacements for the grill and grate so I repaired mine using expanded metal from the hardware store. For a while the PK was not available. It is grand to see that it is back in production and readily available. The grill and grate are also available for those of you who have burned up yours.

    Family Heirloom Quality!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I inherited the original from my grandfather and it is STILL going strong. It holds heat beautifully for slow smoking – just put the fire & wood chips at one end of the grill & the food (over a disposable pan) on the opposite end. It’s easy to roll from place to place (great if it starts raining & you have to move to the garage to finish!). This grill is the envy of my friends & family – I never thought to see this level of quality reproduced.

A Replacement after decades of service
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My dad had one of these for as long as I can remember. I inherited it upon his passing, and it finally burned through on the bottom, after a decade of use in my family. I was heartbroken. I looked for a replacement for years, and have had to settle for the extremely thin junk that was on the market. Imagine my pleasure and surprise when I found this exact replacement. It did not take long for me to decide that this kitchen belonged at my house.

From the durability of the origional unit, and the quality of the food it prepares, I am sure that this will be the last cooker I will ever need to buy.

Used the original whigh I bought new about 1958 until the grate burned out and I found the manufacturer was no longer going. Delighted to fine it is again being manufactured – have used in the interval several different grills and have no doubt this is the best, most versatile, over a period of time most economical grill on the market.

We owned one of these portable kitchens over 25 years ago. It lasted for years running through several sets of grates until the aluminum framed cart literally fell apart, but not the cast aluminum grill. We gave up on it only when we were unable to find replacement grills. We’re glad its once again on the market and plan to buy another.

    A Great Grill!!!!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I used this grill for the first time a couple of weeks ago at my girlfriends cottage. I was amazed. It was better than any charcoal grill I have ever used. It cooks very evenly and has superb temperature control. The one I used was over 40 years old!!! So you know this thing will last a long time. I just got one as a gift and I know it will be a great grill for the next few decades.
