Took this little powerhouse camping and it BBQed everything excellent. It is a very well made grill, and it is very solid, not cheap at all. You get what you pay for.

I read almost all of the reviews here before I ordered. I had to have it. It is a fun grill to use! She gets real hot and sears meat like only cast iron can.

    Pros-

solid yet small. Not cavernous like my Weber kettle which wastes charcoal unless your cooking for an army

perfect for using kabob skewers. The stick hangs over the grill so you can turn with your fingers

I put it in my gas grill and can close the lid to keep the rain out. Great storage in a bigger grill

    Gets super hot for searing

Love the flat grill top. you can put a fry pan right on top. If you leave off the grill top you can do a rotiseree right over the coals

    Cons

you gotta clean it and prevent rust by cleaning and oiling

The vent sliding door is not attached so it can be lost or slide off the unit easily in moving. Plus, really who adjusts the air when cooking. Its either balls open or closed, I might leave it off

lots of nooks and crannies for grease to drip and gather, leaving some slop when mixed with coal ash.

All in all a great buy. Fun at home and camping. And for me, if your using your gas grill, it’s quick and conveinant but not fun….a weekday thing. If your using charcoal, then it feels more like a weekend, it’s special..your really grilling

    My two cents worth

I have been using a lava rock gas grill for the past 26 years, but got tired of having to buy a sub-standard Chinese made low quality stainless steel H-burner every year for around 55 dollars. The original H-burner lasted for about a dozen years before finally giving out. The replacement burners will last about one season. So, I figured I would go back to our original Hibachi grill. The ones that looked like the old 1970′s grills are also made overseas, and are of poor quality. Enter the Lodge Grill (made in the USA). This thing is built like a Sherman tank, and will probably outlast me. I’ve used it three times and now know why so many people give it 5 stars. At first, I was a little put off because there were only two heights to have the grilling surface at. But guess what? You only really need two heights. I only use the highest level, since it works for burgers, steaks, or chicken. I also bought a quick start charcoal chimney. Within ten minutes of deciding I want to grill dinner, I have my food on the grill. I still miss the convenience of my gas grill, but am perfectly happy with this charcoal grill. Another nice point to make is that the Lodge grill fits inside my old gas grill, so I have a way of covering the grill to give my food a little extra smokey flavor. Also, it always bothered me to be done cooking and still have a nice bed of coals burning, so I got creative. When the meat is done, I toss on a bunch of raw peanuts (in the shell). By the time we are done eating, so are the peanuts. Roasted to perfection, I might add. You won’t be sorry that you bought this grill, especially since it’s now well below the $107 that I paid for it. One last thing; cleaning out the ashes is a snap. The day after using the grill, I simply lift out the grate and dump the spent coals in the garden. They tend to hold their shape and not drop into the bottom of the firebox.

I was pleased with the timely arrival of the grill, unfortunately there was several cracks in the grilling grate. It did take me awhile to get into contact with the person I needed to contact regarding this problem. There was an email address on the packing slip with a great message about who to contact. After a couple of weeks, I went back into the Amazon site and found a way to email the distributer that way, and was able to get ahold of someone right away. They say they never got they messages I sent before (I don’t know if that is true – I do have the date stamps on my messages), but they gave me the information on how to get a replacement grill grate right away then. It only took about a week for that to arrive. Overall other than the hassle I was happy with the purchase. Thanks

First thing I did as soon as I got it home was to put it together and prepped for a couple steaks. I really like the ability to get awesome grill marks from the cast iron – the lighter wire grill grates just cant quite get the heat quality that this does. After dinner, dump the ashes and it doubles as a 33lb dumbbell for you to work on your biceps with! Don’t drop it, keep it properly oiled, and your great grand kids will enjoy it after you’re gone. Highly recommended!

    Sportsman’s Grill Review

The Lodge Sportsman’s Grill is well designed, well made, strong, and an all around great product. In these times when we have Communists in our White House and they seem to be trying to collapse our economy and to change our nation to a Communist state, we don’t know what is going to happen from day to day in our nation. Perhaps even civil war. Combine that with natural disasters and one should have a means of cooking using charcoal or wood should the worst happen. This grill fits the need. You can burn small pieces of wood or wood chips, or charcoal in it. We have done both. You can put pots and pans or a dutch oven on it and stick in a few medium size sticks, or some charcoal and you can fry, bake, grill, or barbicue. This grill is made to take punishment and keep on a cookin. With our nation in the state it is in where our economy is being purposly destroyed by traitors, you can’t count on electricity or any thing else. It is best to be prepared for the worst case with one of these. Keep your powder dry folks hard times have just begun.

    Two more cracked grills

After reading all the glowing reviews, I decided to spend the big bucks on what appeared to be the most wonderful little grill. Since I live in Nevada and the shipping origin was Arizona, I expected it to arrive within 4 days tops. I am sad to report that my first grill arrived 5 days later than their projected date (it took 10 days) and upon opening the box, I immediately saw a crack completely through the fire bowl in the lower right bottom (as you look at it)just as Bob P. in July, 2009, reported. Dismayed, I contacted Amazon, explained why FedEx does not work as a shipper where I live (middle of Nevada desert), requested UPS or USPS instead, and was emailed a shipping label to return the grill. Amazon stated they would ship out a replacement grill immediately.

I was delighted to have grill #2 arrive sooner than expected (3 days) and have it delivered by UPS. Delight turned to dismay again as I saw yet another crack in exactly the same place as the previous grill. Again, I contacted Amazon and sent them a photo showing exactly where and what the crack looked like. I was emailed a label, and made the 90 mile trek to the post office to get the grill back in the mail. I had indicated to Amazon that I was up for giving it one more try; if the third grill arrived damaged, I would be ready for a refund.

Shortly after I sent that email, Amazon contacted me and stated that since I had received two damaged grills, they would refund my cost since it was likely another grill would arrive damaged. Perhaps they opened a few boxes and examined the grills? Maybe the shipment they received from Lodge was all defective? I don’t know.

What I can tell you is that I decided to take another leap and order the exact same grill from Ace Hardware. It arrived on exactly the day they projected, cost $20.00 less, and arrived from New York completely intact. So, if anyone orders this grill from Amazon (shipped from Goodyear, AZ), be sure to check it out carefully when it arrives.

This is a great little grill. I had absolutely no problems using it, and, after I was done, it was easy to clean and to put back into the box it came in for easy storage. Very convenient.

Recently, I cooked on this grill a rack of lamb using mesquite coals (I do not use charcoal). I removed the top grill grate and skewered the meat on three large skewers and placed them lengthwise (see picture). The meat on skewers was closer to coals than it would be if I used the top grate, so I decided to remove the inner grate to increase the distance between the meat and the coals. It worked out great.

I think this grill has sufficient cooking surface to prepare food for 3-4 people. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a small grill.

I like this grill. It dosen’t take much charcoal and burns nice and hot. I must admit, I’m still getting used to using it. It takes some skill and experience to get your food just right. It’s worth the trouble though cause when it works well it works really well.

LSG is a nice compact and efficient griller. I’ve used incorporated several of previous the suggestions and added some of my own.

    1) Lining the bottom with aluminum foil for charcoal clean up. Brush and a pail for the ashes.

    2) Costco 36″ chrome carts works well and you can store tools and charcoal

    3) Used an electrical charcoal starter. Starts up really fast and painless. No need for chimmeny starter or lighter fluid or propane torch.

    4) Need to find a lid, someone suggested using an oval duct oven inverted. Haven’t found an economic solution yet. Maybe an shape one out of sheetmetal with a chimney.

    5) Trash cans w/lids of charcoal and a scope. Probably find something at ikea, 99cents or Goodwill.

    6) A small table would be useful. I use a TV dinner table.

    7) Small bottles of olive oil and corn oil with rags and table cloth. It’s nice to have a cart to have it all there for you.

I was able to cook for quite a long time with only using 26 briquettes. Cast iron food tastes so much better and the searing and heat retention is superior. It’s easy to cleanup and like anything requires you to maintain it to keep it in good shape. Best of all it’s fun to cook on and fun to eat.

I can’t believe I waited so long to buy this. My husband refuses to eat anything cooked on any gas grill. This grill is so easy to clean out. Old paintbrush and a plastic bag tucked under the feet. I never have to pick it up to dump the ashes. It cooks so evenly and rarely flares up. I have worn out 3 other cheaper grills. After it is cool, (takes a long time) I put a plastic bin over it to cover it. Fits well enough that it won’t blow off and keeps rain and snow off. Since it gets so hot my husband made a stand for it on the deck out of two decorative concrete blocks.

We were looking for an old hibachi style grill to take to our time share. This one was perfect! It was durable cast iron and should last a life-time and the grilling area was bigger than expected. If I could recommend any change it would be to make an adjustable grate to move up and down to raise or lower depending on the heat of the charcoal.

Well-made, sturdy grill…a snap to assemble. I’m glad I bought this pre-seasoned one. It is large enough to grill 7-8 burgers or 3-4 steaks. You will want to buy a cover if you intend to leave it outside. You may carry it from inside to out each time, but, being cast iron, it is heavy for it’s size. Unlike any other charcoal grills I have owned, this one should last a lifetime if it is not allowed to rust. Amazon delivery was prompt as always.

    Great Grill, but it’s cracked!!!!!
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I purchased this grill as it’s small enough for my needs and I love cast iron. I haven’t been able to use it till last week, so I used it twice and cleaned it out. To my surprise I see a crack on the fire bowl where the left side of the fire door sits. I couldn’t believe it. Last week the 30 days expired so I cannot return it to Amazon so I have to see what I can do now. It cooks great and doesn’t use much charcoal. I am so disappointed.

Update 1: I contacted Lodge and it seems they will send me a new fire bowl as they wanted my address. I will keep you posted when it comes.

The last time I had a grill this good was the original cast iron Hibachi from the 1970s. While there are only 2 height settings the temperature control is very good using the doors to control air flow. The cast iron grill is obviously the best for non-stick easy to clean, great heat transfer cooking. The only thing I can think to improve is the grease control.

I used this BBQ and one of those sunbeams side by side to cook for a cub scout pack. The other grill could fit one more hamburger but in the end, this grill made more hamburgers and they were cooked better. I’ve used it on delicate meats to fishes. Wonderful product.

    Cast Iron Hibachi

This item, although expensive in my mind, is high quality and works well. It is “cured” from the factory and can be set up and used in minutes. It is flexible in the ways you can set up the grill and it has a draft slide to control the heat. The only drawback is when you carry it with the wire handle, it isn’t balanced well. It will likely last a lifetime unless left out in the rain.

I am not a grill nut—I don’t grill every day—but when I want to put salmon or a burger on the coals, I want a good product. This little beauty is simple, easy to use, and ultra durable. I expect to be using it for a long time. It is built solidly and works like a charm. The only negative I observe is that the feet it sits on will conduct heat and burn whatever it is sitting on, so user needs to put something down to protect deck.

Excellent little grill for 3-5 people
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We love our Lodge cast iron pans and dutch ovens so we decided to give this grill a chance. Yes cast iron is heavy but you can give it to your kids and they will hand it down to their kids.

This grill doesn’t use a lot of charcoal, definitely less than my Weber kettle grill for the same amount of food. Warning, being cast iron it takes about 5 more minutes than a typical kettle type grill to get hot but once it is hot it stays hot for a long time. You can get a lot of mileage out of just a little charcoal.

I just leave the draft door off, I don’t see the reason for it. I don’t use the front loader door either. When I’m ready to cook I take off the grill and the grate and use a small shovel to scoop out the old ashes. I put the grate back and start the charcoal in a chimney type starter. Dump the coals when they are ready and put the grill on top. At this point I wait about 5 minutes to let the grill and grilling surface come up to temp.

My Weber will only get used for large parties now as this little grill is perfect for our family of three. Note: the grill cover that comes from Lodge is perfect. Others say it was too small but that problem must have been corrected.

I have had mine for a few weeks now and have cooked on it once per week. I have done burgers and baked potatoes (wrapped in foil and placed in the coals while it is cooling down.) It is just the right size for me to use without a lot of hassle. Easy to clean up–the rack can go in the sink. I have mine on an old microwave cart with two patio stones under it. Cooks wonderfully. I am still learning to use the draft door. I wish I could post my photos of my fabulous dinner tonight! You’ll be glad if you buy this.

    Perfect Table Top Grill
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love this grill!!! I bought my grill at the Pro Bass store in Las Vegas for $84. This thing weighs a ton and by knowing that, I knew it would be one heavy duty lifetime keeper. I have my grill set in the middle of my outdoor wooden table. My friends and I enjoy throwing everthing from steaks to chiscabobs on the little thing…it just gives that hibachi style table setting that you would find at some restaurant. I recommend placing some sort of heat absorbing piece of cut wood on top of your table because it will get hot enough to burn spots in the wood from the little legs.

What else does a person have to say, if you own other cookware by Lodge you know what you are getting. I have cooked on this sportsment grill 3 times already and I am very happy with it. We have a big gas grill but for small meals it is easy and fast. My daughter has her eyes on it and I will not lend it out, maybe buy her one. lol. The grandson and I plan to take it fishing with us to the stream.

    Good for crab
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I was wondering how other people have used this grill. I once cooked a couple of Dungeness right on top of the coals. Not for the squeamish. I laid them upside down. For about a second they were motionless and then they just started kicking like crazy and you start to hearing all this hissing and crackling. You feel sorry for the poor animals, but man, the crab taste good! If you like crab you should try this out, the smoky flavor and the sweetness of the crab go very nice together. Just take them off the coals when their shells have some burnt blackness.

As for the grill itself, I’ve had mine for about 12 years. I use a shop-vac to clean it out. I store my grate indoors. I should probably treat the bowl a little better, but I like the way it looks with some rust on it. I found out that a disposable aluminum roasting pans works well as a cover when you want to smoke something.

Once you know this grill, you can cook anything. This grill will only do for those thick, aged USDA prime cuts. It will cook it beautifully, sear it with a good crust that only charcoal and cast iron can do. As good as any high-end steakhouse I’ve been to.

What a great deal and perfect little hibachi for grilling out. I didn’t know Lodge Logic made a grill. Knowing their other cast iron products i thought this would be a good item. Nice heavy thermal retention for cooking. I use if with Hickory or Mesquite chips no charcoal, fire it up as you would charcoal spread out the coals once the fire dies down. Nice smokey flavored food. It’s also fun to hang out with a little fire.

This grill works like a champ. We use natural hardwood charcoal so there is not a build-up of the white dust like you would get from regular charcoal.

We like the size of the grill the most. It is just my wife and I usually for meals. We do not have to fire up the big Weber just to cook two steaks or a couple pieces of chicken. It is large enough though were we can grill a steak on one side and use a lodge frying pan on the other for onions and peppers. It works great while car camping for the dutch ovens too.

We use two scrap pieces of ceramic tile as a base so it does not damage the surface on our deck.

We liked it so much that we gave the in-laws one for Christmas this year.

We cannot wait for college football season to kick back off so we can try it out at tailgating.
